Chapter XIV

Present Day

England

Katherine had avoided returning to her family’s home for several weeks, but her father’s sixtieth birthday could not be ignored. Despite the aching loneliness it had caused on every visit home since then, Katy found herself inevitably drawn to the isolated beach her family shared with Hayden’s estate.

Three years had passed since he had won, and broken, her heart. Three long years. Recognizing the futility of pining for someone who didn’t want her, Katy closed her eyes and tried to imagine standing on the windswept coast with Jeremy. She failed.

“Why?” she spoke to the wind as though it were capable of carrying her question to the man her stubborn heart pined for. “Hayden, why did you leave the rose? Was it to torment me? Break me? Well, you succeeded. And just when I thought there might be an end to this…” Clasping the Always charm in a tight fist, she shook her head, bitter anger lacing her repeated question, “Why?”

She drew another breath, wrangling control over her emotions as she continued to gaze out, her heart shattering as she acknowledged an unwanted truth: Hayden was never coming back for her.

Katherine again closed her eyes against the setting sun’s bright rays, enjoying how its warmth combatted the wind’s chill across her skin.

Crunching leaves drew her attention. Turning, blinking against sun spots in her vision, she gazed across the field, but saw no one.

“Hayden?” she asked, caught between anger and hope. “Are you there?”

Raising a hand to better see in the bright light, she continued to search. Finally, she lowered her hand, turning to give the coast one last glance.

A strong pair of arms wrapped around her waist.

“Hayden!” she spoke, twisting in relief to meet a pair of ice blue eyes.

Hayden’s were green.
