CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

IT WAS CHRISTMAS EVE and Amari was staring at her empty store.

She hadn’t been back since she’d got back home from Daria. Pete had been waiting for her when she’d got to her house. When she’d told him her plans to leave the store closed until after Christmas, he’d offered to run things until Christmas Eve. It was only for two days, so she’d accepted. Except she hadn’t been accepting because it was only for two days. She’d been accepting because she was a coward who couldn’t bear to be in a space she had once shared with the man she loved.

That realisation had hit her the moment her flight from Daria had taken off. The impact was nowhere as severe as she expected. It told her that her heart had been ahead of her brain for a long time.

But it didn’t matter. She had chosen to come home and figure out how to be a better parent to May. It didn’t matter that every time she thought about it, she heard Kade telling her she was already doing her best. And that she deserved to be happy. That May deserved to see her happy.

And now she was standing in her store on Christmas Eve, trying to figure out whether running the place still made her happy.

‘The last two days I’ve spent at home have been really great,’ she said out loud. ‘I got to spend time prepping the house for Christmas with May. She loved it, though we did have to work through her feelings about leaving Daria. She wasn’t thrilled that she didn’t even get to say goodbye to Kade.’

Neither had Amari, but that was for the best.

‘But the last two weeks without you has been...eye-opening. It’s not you, I don’t think. It was more spending time with May. And finding out I really like working with kids who aren’t my own. Who would have thought it?’ She ran a hand over the shelf in front of her. ‘I need to figure out how to balance you with those other things. And I don’t know how to do that right now.’

She would have spent longer thinking about it if the bell to the door hadn’t rung. She whirled around. Her heart just about stopped.

‘Kade.’ It came out like some kind of breathy prayer. She cleared her throat. ‘Wh-what are you doing here?’

‘I don’t have a job any more?’

He said the words with his unbearable charm. Oh, she’d missed him. And the thought of it made her want to throw something at him. The thought, and the fact that he was standing in front of her looking so damn handsome in his perfect suit that fitted his perfect body. She could still feel it beneath her fingers.

‘You have more important jobs.’

‘I love you.’

She stared at him. ‘What. The. Hell?’

‘I didn’t get to tell you that before you left.’

‘That’s why I didn’t say goodbye, genius. So you didn’t get to say it.’

His brow furrowed. ‘You knew?’

‘No. Not for sure.’ She closed her eyes.
