11.
For a moment, I was hyperaware of Peter â s presence beside me. There was something about the dark that made the atmosphere intensify. I heard the strike of a match, and then a candle flickered to life over by Mrs Kanumba â s desk, softly lighting the room.
â Looks like we â ve lost our electricity, â she said, â I â ll check the generator. â
â I â ll go with you, â my sister added, standing from her seat and grabbing a tiny torch from her handbag. You could never say she didn â t come prepared.
â All of you sit tight until we get back, â Mrs Kanumba said before she and Rebecca left.
â This is bullshit, â Belinda huffed. â I only have ten percent battery left on my tablet. â She glanced at Anna. â What about you? â
â Eight percent, â Anna answered, glancing dolefully at the screen of her phone.
Nearby, Sophia lit another candle. â That â s the great thing about chess. No electricity is required. â
â Go ahead and be smug about it, â Belinda griped.
Peter nudged me, and I glanced his way. Watch this.
In his palm was a small piece of paper that he â d somehow folded to create a cube. He set it down on the coffee table in front of us, and I stared at his hands as they moved in a circular motion. A tiny light flickered inside the cube. Peter whispered a soft, â Illuminate, â and the cube lit up, giving off as much light as a small lamp.
How did you do that?
It â s just a spell I came up with when I was a kid.
You created a spell all on your own? I asked, impressed.
He nodded. My father had strict rules about lights out. But I always wanted to stay up and read, so after he turned the lights off, I â d create my own little light to read by.
Couldn â t he see it shining under the door?
I made a tent with my blanket and kept the light underneath.
How ingenious.
It comes in handy during blackouts.
â How did you create that light? â The question cut through Peter â s and my conversation, and we both looked up to find Belinda and Anna standing in front of us.
â It â s a spell, â Peter replied.
â Show me how you did it, â Belinda requested. Some of the bitchiness was gone from her tone, and she sounded genuinely curious.
â Why should he do that? â I asked. â You â ve been nothing but rude to us ever since we got stuck here. â
Belinda cocked her head to me. â Was I talking to you? â
â No, but I â m talking to you. â
She made an overly dramatic gesture of exasperation. â Ugh, this constant bickering is boring, and I â m already bored, so let â s call a truce. We were friends once, right? â she said, and I arched an eyebrow.
