The Eagle Has Landed
After Colin had recovered from the shock that his innocent adopted daughter was growing up far too quickly and, now under my maturing daughterâs influence, had acquired a thing about Bananarama, Bros, New Kids on the Block, and, God forbid the Beastie Boys, we settled down to prioritise our actions â that said, he was visibly disturbed by the crop-top idea Beth and Faith had floated as their choice of weekend attire.
Incidentally, I did warn my colleague, Jayne Stone, that she should protect the badge on her VW Golf as there soon would be a spate of badge thefts as the emblem was about to become an iconic rap symbol. Jayne laughed it off even though her husband Frank agreed with me, and God knows how he would have any idea of the future. Anyway, Jayne ignored our warning, and within a few weeks, sure enough, the badge was duly removed, and now I suspected it took pride of place around some teenagerâs neck â hopefully not my daughterâs.
After Jess had spotted Patrick, and George had spied the evil Shirley Colney supping her drink only feet from where we were sitting, this left us with three urgent priorities. Firstly â check the girls were okay â tick! Secondly, feed the kids before Christopher gorged through a monthâs worth of snacks â Jenny was on the case. And lastly â find Martin, although we now called him Leonardo, and thankfully George had cottoned on.
Jess thought it odd that Randy Mandy knew Leonardo, a point I managed to gloss over. However, I did state that I wasnât too fond of the connection of him being AWOL along with Patrick and Shirley reappearing.
As the conversation flowed, of course, Jenny, George and I had the other dread festering in the pit of our stomachs that also Paul was back to muddy the waters, so to speak.
Like in any good Scooby-Doo cartoon, we split up to investigate. Jenny, AKA Daphne Blake and Colin, AKA Scooby (simply because all other characters were assigned, so I decided he had to be the dog ⦠unfair? Hmmm ⦠maybe) stayed back to organise tea and, with Christopherâs support, protect the girls if Cruella de Vil and the Incredible Hulk came calling. George, AKA Fred Jones, Jess AKA Velma Dinkley, and me, AKA Shaggy Rogers, jumped in the Quattro, AKA the Mystery Machine, to search Donâs house to look for clues about the strange disappearance of the time-traveller, Leonardo. That said, Velma had no idea about Martinâs true origins.
âDad? I know Colin will be a bit miffed, but I think Iâd feel safer if we stay at yours tonight? Iâm too spooked after seeing Patrick today,â asked Jess pensively, as she leant through the gap between the front seats as I sped the Mystery Machine over to Donâs house.
âYou know you can. Weâll give Jenny a call from Donâs to get the spare bed sorted.â
âThanks. You sure Jenny wonât mind?â
âNo, course not.â
âOkay, Iâd better grab a bag of stuff for Colin and Faith.
