Time crept by as Ven and Ela kissed and talked. Her tentative hands on him drove him wild. His fangs throbbed at the thought of being with her. She was amazing, and he couldn’t believe how lucky he was to have found her. When the sun set, he drove her to her apartment in one of the coven’s vehicles, a sporty two-door import. They were followed by two other coven vehicles with guards to keep an eye out for them.

He’d heard from Cyrus that Dargan and his people left without issue at sunset. Several family members followed their vehicles to ensure they left the coven’s territory. Old school vampires like Dargan and Mishka held to certain standards of behavior, and one of the major ones was that a master was responsible for his people. Another closely held belief was that you didn’t let your people feed from unwilling humans.

Ven and Brone killing the three males could’ve started a skirmish between Dargan’s coven and theirs, but Dargan wasn’t powerful enough and didn’t have a large enough coven to go against Mishka, so he’d simply had to leave town with his proverbial tail between his legs. Ven and Brone were within their rights to kill the males for harming Ela because she was under Mishka’s protection.

She was also under his, and no way in hell was he going to let anyone hurt her again. That was for damn sure.

He waited while she unlocked her door. “Have you been in this complex before?”

“I was responsible for the renovation when Mishka bought it. It was a crumbling mess ten years ago.”

“You were alive in the forties,” she said. “It’s probably helpful to have knowledge of that time period when you’re renovating.”

“It is.”

“Why did Mishka pick the forties?”

She put her bag on a side chair and toed off her work shoes.

“It was built in the forties, and he wanted to stay true to the original. Do you like it?”

“I really do. It’s the nicest place I’ve ever lived.” She bit her bottom lip and gazed up at him with those big, beautiful eyes. “Ven?”

“Yeah, sweetheart?”

He put his hand on the crux of her shoulder and rested his thumb on her pulse.

“We were supposed to go on a date tonight.”

“I’d like to postpone until tomorrow, simply because the coven’s resources are being used right now to deal with Dargan and his people, and you were also traumatized.”

She let out a low chuckle. “Good point. But you can stay with me? I don’t know how long I’ll be able to stay up since I’m a night sleeper right now.”

“What do you think about being a daytime sleeper?” He slid his hand down her arm and captured her fingers, bringing them to his lips.

“I think I’ll like it. I should invest in a sleep mask so I’m not bothered by daylight.”

“There are shutters for the windows here in the complex. It’s the only way I’d be able to stay with you.”

“I hadn’t thought about that. Honestly,”
