CHAPTER 14
MAYA
The entire day has ended and not a word from Jeffrey. I have a gut wrench feeling Jodie is behind this. She can’t hide him forever, my brother will find out the truth eventually. I will make sure of it. There’s a saying which states most people convey two faces. The one they want you to see and the one that remains hidden. I thought I knew Jodie pretty well, but I was terribly mistaken. The woman has a serious problem. She’s seeing three men at the same time, and two of whom don’t belong to her. She might as well quit her job and stand on the street corner and become a prostitute. Jodie opens her legs to everyone, just like in college; she hasn’t changed a bit. And the men haven’t changed either; they’re still chasing her tail. I turn off my lamp and shut my eyes to get some rest. The next morning I check my phone to see if Jeffrey has called. My call log is empty. I shower. Eat breakfast. And make my way to work. Inside my office I stare at the computer screen. I’m still faced with an unbalanced ledger. My numbers are off by thousands of dollars unaccounted for. Where have the funds disappeared to? I have to report it to my superior. I’ve searched every possible loophole and nothing turns up. I hate to assume the worst; I believe someone is embezzling money from the company. I have to find out before they implicate me. I’m the accountant, the first person to be investigated when money is missing. As I continue to rack my brain and find out what is happening, there’s a solid knock on my door. I politely tell them to come in. When the door opens my boss walks in with two security officers standing behind him. And he doesn’t look happy.
“Maya, if you were in financial straits, all you had to do was ask me for help. I would have done everything in my power to assist you. You’re one of my best employees. Did you think I wouldn’t find out thousands of dollars were missing? What sort of fool do you take me for?”
“I didn’t take the money. Mr. Pearson, I’m not a criminal. I’m your accountant. I’ve been working around the clock desperately to find the missing funds. You have to believe me.” Mr. Pearson towers over the security guards in my office. Rumor has it he played basketball in his collegiate days. His wiry frame and lanky six feet four stature makes him look even more menacing standing in front of my doorway.
“Maya, even if I wanted to believe you, I couldn’t. They’re too many discrepancies. You left a trail so wide and long it was impossible for me not to pick up on it. I am amazed at your savviness, the sheer boldness of you believing you would get away with it. I will not press charges on you just yet. I’m giving you a week to return all monies that are missing.
