Practice thinking through your interpretation of an event before you respond to it. When little or big things happen this week, pause and notice yourself interpreting them in a positive or negative light. Ask yourself, “What is the most constructive and helpful way of interpreting this?” Try to put your interpretation into words, especially if you are inclined to respond with anger, fear, shame, or harshness.

If something upsets you this week, write down your interpretation of the event. Then compare your interpretation to the ANTs in the article “Identifying ANTs” in the Appendix. Have you overgeneralized? Are you predicting the future? Are you focusing on the negative? What would be a more constructive way to interpret the event?
