unexpected upon reaching

seventy, the heart well-calloused

from life’s adversity,

the voice of awakening

possibility stands there

with enthusiasm,

waiting to be welcomed.

Sheer joy, long lain idle

amid tarnished energy

and the body’s decision

to limp along instead of run,

rubs her sleepy eyes

in blinking amazement.

An invitation to step out,

to go beyond

where the past limited

the view, to break down

the door nailed shut

by angry demand and loud opinion.

Finally, in these remaining years

a friend so fine, so good, so true,

so full of dancing spirit

that all the hard years slip away

with barely a whisper.
