“How was your weekend?” I asked Ivan as he walked into my office on Monday morning.

“Better than yours. You don’t look good at all, my friend.”

“I’m feeling rough today. I thought about staying home, but that won’t help.”

“What did you do this weekend?”

“I spent it with Nikki. I took her to dinner on Thursday, then we spent the night at the library on Friday. From Saturday evening until late last night, I spent time at her house while we watched eggs hatch.”

“That’s the . . . Wow. Isn’t that a lot like watching grass grow?”

“Not if you’re in good company.”

“How are things progressing?” Ivan scoffed, “I guess I don’t really have to ask, considering you look like you got hit by a train.”

“It’s getting worse,” I admitted. “My bones ache so badly that sometimes it’s all I can think about.”

“We should shift and spend some time outside. Don’t you think you’ll feel better if we do that?”

“I don’t think so. I don’t think anything’s going to help at this point. How are you doing?”

“I’m better. I finally took the potion Clarisse made, and it perked me up. I feel . . . hopeful. I guess that’s the word for it. I still miss her every second of every day, but I don’t want to join her as badly as I did for a while. I’m not sure if it’s the potion or if that’s just from the passing of time.”

“I think I’ll call Clarisse and see if she’s up for a visit. And I’ll take your advice and shift so we can spend some time outside. Want to come with me?”

“Sure. I’m always down to visit Clarisse. She’s a pistol.”

“That she is.”

An hour later when we arrived at our friend's house in the small town of Mereu, she greeted me at the door with a frown.

“It’s not working anymore, is it?”

I shook my head, and Ivan said, “I don’t think so. It’s given me a boost, but it’s not doing much for him.”

“I think that’s the problem,” Clarisse said as she waved us into her home. I stopped and took it all in, looking around in amazement like I did every time I was here.

From the outside, her house looked like a modest two-story home. When you walked inside, you realized it was anything but. Her magic could be felt like a blanket, and it showed in every nook and cranny of the house.

Amazed at the space and wondering how in the hell she did it, I followed her across the wide entry hall between the double staircase that led up to the other floors - not just the second floor like the house portrayed from the outside. If you stopped between the two staircases and looked up, you could see at least five floors above you along with what seemed like a skylight at first, but in reality, was an open roof.

Occasionally, a leaf would drift down from above, blown in from one of the trees outside.
