Jack opened his eyes...actually was able to open his eyes and keep them open. A giant tube filled his throat as he looked around the room and saw machines and monitors beeping softly to his heart beat.

"It's about time you woke up.” Murph sat in the chair next to his bedside.

Jack blinked to clear the cobwebs from his head. Murph leaned closer to his bed. "How do you feel?"

Jack rolled his eyes.

"Just as I thought.” He handed Jack a notepad and pencil. "Here. The doctor said you have to keep the tube in for a while longer. Write what you want.”

With a trembling hand, Jack scribbled something on it and handed it back.

"How long?" Murph glanced at it. "You've been here for a little over a month, getting your beauty rest, while the rest of us have been working.” He patted Jack's arm. "The doctor says you're gonna mend just fine."

Jack took the notepad and wrote something else.

"Was Cindy here?"

Murph read it and smiled. "Yes, I called her. She stayed the whole first night, along with the guys from the station. Briggs and some of your other neighbors came by, too. Everybody is pulling for you, especially Cindy. She comes here every day."

So she had been there. He hadn't imagined it. Why was she wasting her time sitting around the hospital? When he moved his arm away from the notepad, a sharp pain shot across his chest. One of the last things he heard were machines beeping loudly as he slipped into darkness.

"Jack? What is it?" Murph checked for a pulse and couldn't find one. “Jack, don’t do this to me. Wake up. Wake up you son of a gun, we need you here with us.” A doctor and a couple of nurses rushed into the room with a crash cart and pushed him out of the way.
