Chapter 10

After running a few errands, she headed home. As soon as she drove up she noticed Greg’s car was already there. She pulled into her space just as her cell phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she turned off the ignition and answered. “Hello.”

“Hi, neighbor, I need a favor,” Greg said.

She looked up through the front windshield. Gregory was standing in his doorway watching her. “A cup of sugar?”

“No.”

“What’s the favor?” she asked.

“I made too much food, now I’m stuck. Are you hungry?”

“Toss it, freeze it,” she suggested easily.

“That would be wasteful, not a good idea,” he said simply. “It’s dinner, that’s it.”

“Dinner, huh?” she said, getting out of the car carrying her briefcase and purse. She was hungry, having skipped lunch, and had intended to toss something in the microwave. “What kind of food did you order, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Thai or pizza?”

“None of the above. I cooked,” he said proudly.

She laughed. “You cooked.”

“Do you doubt my culinary abilities?”

“Oh heavens, no, I remember, you’re a Renaissance man,” she said, still chuckling. “I’m sure you’re an excellent cook. So what are we having, Cheerios or Frosted Flakes?”

It was his turn to laugh. “Neither, I cooked grilled salmon, asparagus and lemon-herb couscous.”

“Umm, sounds good. But truthfully, I was gonna grab something quick and get some work done,” she said, using her hip to close the car door. She walked up the path to their shared house.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

She reached the open vestibule. He leaned casually against his door frame as he watched her approach. She took the phone from her ear and disconnected. He did the same. She looked at him and shook her head. “What am I going to do with you?”

He smiled knowingly. “I have a few ideas.”

She shook her head. “Gregory, are you flirting with me?”

“Yes, I am.”

She walked toward the steps leading to her upstairs condo. She took two steps up, and turned and leaned on the rail. “Why are you so tempting?” she said, then wished she could take it back.

“Tempting.” He smiled wide and nodded. “I like that. It’s nice to know. Come.” He turned and walked back into his condo, leaving the door open for her to follow.

Jacqueline stood on the step a moment. She closed her eyes and shook her head. She knew exactly what was going to happen. They were going to eat a wonderful dinner and then they were going to make love. Her heart raced and her body tingled in anticipation. He did this to her without a single touch. The door was open. All she had to do is walk through it. She took a deep breath, turned off her rational mind and walked inside.

Gregory was in the dining room lighting candles. The table was set for two with sparkling glassware and monogrammed china. He looked up and smiled, obviously having fully expected her to follow him inside. She walked over and ringed her finger around the rim of a glass. “Wow, the table’s beautiful. I guess I was a foregone conclusion, huh?”

“Not at all, but I’d hoped.
