I sit on the side of the pool and swish my legs back and forth. My skin tingles as the urge to let out my tail grows within me. If I was just here alone with Wade, it would already be out, but there are so many people about during the MerSoc meeting that I'm not sure how I feel about it.

"Hey, Fi," Melody says as she takes a seat next to me and dips her legs into the pool.

"I didn't realise you'd arrived," I say to my friend.

"I came changed." She gestures to the bikini she's wearing. As difficult as it's been for me to get my tail out, it must be so much worse for her in that she can't do it at all unless she risks enchanting all of the non-sirens in the room.

"How did meeting Josh's parents go? You never said."

Her eyes light up. "It went well. Or at least, I think it did. His mum was a little wary at first, but she relaxed when she realised I knew how to sign."

I frown. "Didn't Josh already tell her you could?"

"He did, but she's very protective of him."

"Understandably. I can imagine it must be terrifying to her."

Melody chuckles. "Don't say that around Josh, he'll give you a lecture about how he's perfectly capable of looking after himself. Which he is. But I do get it. There's a lot more to think about than I expected when we started dating."

I nod. I can't pretend to understand, but I know she's put a lot of work into making sure she can accommodate Josh's deafness.

"But he's worth it." She lets out a sigh.

A splash in the water diverts our conversation away from the topic at hand and Georgie pops her head out of the water. She makes the rest of the way over and hoists herself up onto the side.

"You have a serious expression on your face," Melody says. "What are you planning?"

"You haven't got us involved in another party, have you?" I add.

Georgie chuckles. "Not until next Christmas. You know we'll be organising the Christmas Pool Party every year now."

"How long are you planning on staying at Obscure Academy?" I ask.

"At least two more years," she responds. "My course is four. And that's if I don't do a Master's afterwards."

"She's never leaving," Melody quips.

Georgie rolls her eyes. "I will. But no, it's not about a party, it's about the Merton visit. Helena wants final numbers so she knows how much to charge each of us for the bus. Are you coming?"

Melody shakes her head. "I haven't experimented enough with my magic reserves to be able to guarantee I can have my tail out long enough."

Georgie nods. "I thought as much, though maybe you'll be able to next year?"

"I hope so," the siren responds. "At least it's a possibility now. Josh is helping me experiment more."

A smile spreads over my face at hearing the happiness in her voice. It must have been really hard not to sing
