Chapter Twelve

Bexley

“I’m pretty much ready to go,” I said while accounting for everything that I planned to pack in my small weekend bag. I still had plenty of items back at the Bronzeheart estate, so I wasn’t that worried about forgetting something.

Still, there were a few essentials that I always had on me, including my stuffed dragons which were currently finding a home inside the backpack that Breaker had on his lap.

I had no idea how I was pulling it off—or maybe I wasn’t—but I was trying my best to not sound shaken about the meeting earlier. More than anything, though, I felt worried about everyone at the academy and the security breaches she had mentioned. As I thought back on the meeting and the fear I saw in some of the passing faces, I couldn’t help but face the reality that there was something scary happening here. The creature inside of me felt protective and defensive, not liking that there was a potential threat to a place we now considered home. It was unacceptable.

Trying to put it from my mind, though, was harder than I’d like to admit.

“Mo chuisle.”

“Love that nickname,” I admitted, offering him a soft, affectionate look.

“You seem worried.” His brow dipped as he leaned forward, his massive frame filling my bedroom perfectly. I loved when my mates were in smaller spaces like this. I liked feeling like they were everywhere at once.

“I’m okay.” I exhaled and tried to explain. “I’m just a bit thrown off by how freaked out everyone seemed to be—it makes me feel on edge. Also, I was excited about my new classes this week, and now at least half the week is canceled, which is a bit of a bummer.”

“I promise we will be back as soon as this event is over. I prefer it here than back at any of our homes.” Breaker took my hand and pulled me to stand between his legs. I put my hand on his large shoulders as he examined my expression and spoke honestly. “Although if we had a home, I would want to be there.”

“I love the sound of that.” I flushed, drawing my lip in. “I didn’t even consider that. With all four of us being mates…how will that work?”

“I’m not sure, but we’ll figure it out—we always do,” Breaker assured me. I knew he was right. We would figure it out, and while it was a bit unexpected, I was excited to go back home and hear what Celine had to tell me about my family. It was like a missing puzzle piece dangling in front of me, and I was beyond eager to grab it.

“Let’s head out!” Gage called from the other room. Breaker had already packed his own backpack, which he slung over his shoulders before helping me slide my own over my arms and onto my back. As I stepped back and tried to grab my weekend bag, he swooped in and took it, lifting it over his shoulder and offering me an affectionate knowing smile.
