I ran straight into Ash, who must have been about to step inside. He grabbed me by the shoulders and pulled me to him.

"Summer, are you all right?" he rumbled. He sounded concerned, but being pressed against his hard body felt so good.

"People need to stop asking me that," I said to his chest. "I'm fine." More or less. I stayed pressed there until Zinnia loudly huffed. Reluctantly I turned my face toward her, but stayed within his broad arms.

Zinnia looked at me down her nose, her expression unimpressed.

Undaunted, I returned her gaze until her eyes flicked downward.

She cleared her throat and fixed her eyes on mine again, less aggressive this time. "What's this about a key?" she asked coolly. "You were supposed to look for a portal."

I drew my face back from Ash and shot her an unapologetic look.

"Surprise," I said weakly. Now I knew for certain she wasn't Myrta, I gave her a watery smile. She might never talk about it, but she must have experienced the same horror of being trapped in her own body that I had. The ability to see and hear everything, but not act on it. I had never felt so powerless in my life and to be honest, I wouldn't wish it on anyone, even Zinnia. Not even Calla, who seemed ready to embrace the idea.

I glanced over my shoulder. "We should talk," I said softly.

She scowled. "I didn't come here to…" Her eyes shifted nervously.

"Yes you did," I said. "You're not the monster here. Neither am I."

She licked her lips. "I don't think—"

"We need to work together," I said insistently. I silently begged her to agree. Gods, surely by now she understood what was at stake here.

Ash interrupted my thoughts. "Where are the others?" he asked.

"Ash!" Saff's voice behind me answered the question. "There you are, big guy."

Ash gave him a nod. "Here we are," he agreed. "We will work together. We must. Zinnia and I have reached an accord."

My heart stopped. I looked up at him. Did he really mean—

He smiled at me. "I told her everything. She agreed the realm is the priority. She's here to help."

I looked at her in surprise, but she gave me nothing in return but a slow blink. I sighed to myself. Of course she would help, but that didn't mean we were reconciled. Whatever it took, even if Ash had to be a go-between.

"Did you sleep with her?" Saff whispered loudly.

Zinnia turned pink and her expression became tight. " Where is my sister?" she asked. "My other sister," she corrected herself before I could protest.

"Inside." Saff jerked a thumb over his shoulder.

"I must speak to her," Zinnia declared. She swept past me and into the building.

"I did not have sex with her," Ash assured me. "She attempted to seduce me, but I had to decline. I explained my heart is with another." He gave me a soft smile.

"No wonder she's pissed off," Saff remarked.

I snorted softly. "That doesn't explain the other hundred and twenty-three years.
