Scarlett

She strode away from Prince Kaze’s chambers, holding her shoes slung over her shoulder. The cool tile felt good against her bare feet. The more things changed the more they stayed the same.

Here she was, doing the ‘walk of shame’ back to her quarters. And once again, she’d gotten into an argument with the man she’d just slept with, and things had gotten dicey and she’d bailed.

If only he hadn’t gone on and on about what her life was going to be like dating a monarch, and all the things expected of her. Shaving her head? For real? How do you just casually bring something like that up?

And he’d gone to great lengths to make it sound as if their wedded bliss was a foregone conclusion. For fuck’s sake, he hadn’t even asked her what she thought about marriage. He’d just asked if it were too early to talk about making it happen.

It wasn’t that the idea was abhorrent. It was that she wanted to make her own choices, and in her own time. Being pushed into things was how she’d wound up signing that contract to work in outer space for GPS, thinking it would be on a luxury station like Syfer instead of a hunk of rock floating through the cosmos one bad malfunction away from a total disaster.

She made her way to her quarters and closed the door behind her. Scarlett slipped out of her clothing and went to draw herself a bath. Kaze’s scent covered her skin. Smelling it reminded her of him, and she needed space mentally as well as physically.

One thing she loved about Dragonions was their predilection for bathing. They seemed to love soaking in hot water, which meant their tubs were crafted with the utmost care.

The tub in her quarters consisted of some copper hued metal with an overlay of silver-hued scales. The scales and general sculpting created an effigy of a deep-sea predator fish native to their home world.

Though the tub appeared fierce on the outside, the interior proved anything but. Long enough to stretch out in, with just the right amount of traction on the bottom to avoid slipping, the tub also featured a gently sloped far edge which made it ideal for lounging.

Scarlett slipped into the hot, sudsy water one leg at a time. She gasped at the heat, just this side of too much. Inch by inch, she submerged herself in the steaming water until immersed up to the neck.

Her muscles relaxed, promoting a sigh from her lips. Scarlett worked her legs, getting the tension out of them. Her toes peeked above the suds for just a moment, the motion sending snowy ripples across the surface of the water.

The tub worked its magic, helping her feel less anxious about her tense parting with Kaze. She had confidence they would come together again soon enough. There were four dates left, after all.

Maybe he’d learn to slow down a little bit, or at least back off of telling her all the royal duties expected of her.
