Vision of the Future #1: More and Better Apprenticeships

There is a fond remembrance in the UK for apprenticeships, and little wonder. In the 1950s and 1960s they provided young people with relevant skills that led to a lifetime of employment. They also satisfied a need among many young people for practical skills rather than academic or theoretical ones. Clearly there is a valuable place for the study of subjects such as politics, philosophy and economics, but this should not be at the expense of technical or practical skills such as mechanical and electrical engineering and construction, or vocational skills such as nursing and teaching. We need to encourage more and more apprenticeships of every type: those that address current and future Business needs, such as the need for App Designers and Digital Marketers; those that address service roles, such as tourism, hospitality and financial services; and those that are perennially important roles, notably apprenticeships relating to engineering, construction and manufacturing. It is in the best interests of Business to design and deliver these apprenticeships so that they generate a steady supply of the most relevant, capable and skilled employees.

Many companies in the UK do all this very well. Indeed there are very few large Businesses – so deeply immersed in the global search and race for talent that “grow your own” is a sine qua non – who don't have first-class apprenticeship schemes; but they could do so much more to “force” (or maybe the euphemism “partner with” would be a better phrase) their supply base in all areas and of all sizes to do the same.
