CJ rested his head back against the ledge of the hot springs and regarded me with a narrow-eyed look that despite our somewhat short acquaintance I was coming to recognize. It meant heâd weighed something up and reached a conclusion about something that would no doubt turn out to be scarily accurate.
âWhat?â
âI know you want to ask.â
I slid lower in the water until it lapped against my chin. âAsk about what?â
âYour book.â
I did. It kept popping up in my brain like some sort of internet virus that refused to go away. âYou havenât finished reading it. I assumed youâd want to read it all first.â
âI do.â
I shrugged. âWell, then. I guess I can wait.â In truth, I was burning with curiosity, but any opinion CJ gave before reading it all would be a half opinion, especially considering that most of Leeâs criticisms had come from the book as a whole rather than any particular part of it. Therefore, as much as it killed me, it was better to wait.
âIâll finish it tomorrow.â Any additional comments CJ might have made were curtailed by the chime of his phone. He reached over to where heâd left it on the side of the pool, tilting it so he could see the screen, the grimace on his face as he read the message making it clear that he wasnât pleased to hear from whoever it was.
âBad news?â
He shook his head, but I didnât have to be a body language expert to see that his whole demeanor had changed, his shoulders stiff where theyâd been relaxed only moments before. He forced a smile, but it didnât reach his eyes. âSorry. I should have left my phone in the locker. I donât know why I didnât.â
I didnât know why he hadnât either. Especially when by some miracle heâd actually relinquished his camera. Even if it had been accompanied by a thousand questions to the blue-haired staff member whoâd looked like she was seriously regretting being on shift during CJâs visit. Sheâd done everything short of signing a waiver to convince CJ that no one was going to come out of the forest and steal his camera during the single hour we were booked into the hot springs for. My quietly spoken comment that perhaps he would have been better leaving it in the cabin hadnât gone down that well either.
I had a choice. I could either let his reaction at the message go, or I could push for information. In the end, curiosity won out over common sense. âWho was it?â
CJ let out a breath. âMy ex.â
âOh!â Something about the way Iâd said the word had his gaze sliding over to mine. âRecent?â I curled my fingers into my palms as I waited for his answer, which eventually came in the form of a curt nod. It wasnât like Iâd thought that a guy like CJ wouldnât have a past, but it was another reminder that a world existed outside this hotel. A world that once the road was cleared, we would both need to return to.
