Ordinary Moments
In 1 Samuel 16, the prophet gets a pretty direct word from God about letting go of a big fish. That fish is the king of Israel: Saul. Saul is not living in the dead center of Godâs plan for his life, and the consequences for him will be grave. God begins to prepare Samuel to let go of the king he serves.
âHow long will you mourn?â asks the Lord. âFill your horn with oil and be on your wayâ (1 Sam. 16:1). Be on your way. (Now, thatâs probably what Karen Hughes heard God speak to her spirit. Itâs certainly what I heard when God asked me to sell my home.)
So Samuel goes off to find the next king. First Samuel 16 and 17 mark the most curious part of King Davidâs life for me. They tell the story of how Samuel anointed young David as the eventual king and go on to give an account of his first public moment of victory. The passage starts out with a proclamation from God. âI have chosen . . .â says the God of the universe. God trusted His own handiwork and knew that several years before, Heâd woven just the right substance into a little guy born to Jesse.
So Samuel heads off to Jesseâs home to anoint Godâs chosen one. Upon inspection, Samuel passes by all seven of Jesseâs first boys.
Boys who looked strong.
Boys who looked wise.
Boys who looked street tough.
Then (oh, this is my favorite part), Samuel asks if there isnât anyone else. Whatâs Jesseâs reply? âOh, sure, but heâs tending sheep.â Itâs an everyday, ordinary job. Tending sheep! How can this little guy be the one?
Jesse brings David out of the field, and he is, in fact, the chosen one. Can you just imagine the discernment coursing through Samuelâs body when David walks into his presence? Yep, this is the one.
He is small.
He is without much experience.
He is wide-eyed and innocent.
But Samuel anoints him. And then . . . Davidâs dad sends him back to the fields. Wait a minute! Wasnât this guy just anointed king? Shouldnât he get a robe, a scepter, a bodyguard, a budget? Nope! David goes back to being just a shepherd.
Today you might hear,
âSheâs just a housewife . . .â
âSheâs just a college student . . .â
âSheâs just running car pool . . .â
âSheâs just retired . . .â
âSheâs just . . .â
Ordinary moments.
Moments when weâre willing to be just what God wants us to be and nothing more. Moments when we wait for the right time to resign, move, sell, or change. Moments when weâre willing to be humble and willingly serve where we are. These are the moments God uses to further develop those special strengths and capabilities.
Out there in the field, David was just tending sheep, but he was also becoming a mighty warrior. He was learning to defeat hungry lions. He was learning to be watchful. He was learning to be brave. He was learning to love and protect a helpless flock.
