Arty smiled. “Yes, sugar. And I believe there are things we need to talk about too. Nothing serious, just our likes, dislikes, and things like that.”

“What are you doing today?” I asked. Now that he’d said yes, I didn’t want to waste another moment.

Arty frowned, his smile slipping. “I need to get back home. Sorry. I’ve been working so much the past week that my place is a mess. I need to do some thorough cleaning today.”

“I can help you with that!” I offered. I knew how busy Arty had been that week, and if I could do something to reduce his stress, I would. I could just as well pay someone to clean his place, but the idea of doing it myself, of doing simple things for Arty appealed to me. Taking care of his basic needs, making his life just a tad easier, called to me on some deep level I couldn’t understand. All I knew was that I wanted to go to Arty’s place with him so he could have a lazy day while I took care of everything.
