Chapter Seventeen

“Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

There is none other commandment greater” (Mark 12:31)

Back in my office the following week, after much research, I decided to direct my attention toward Viktor’s acquaintances. I located a phone number for one William “Bill” Rambo who was residing in the state of Florida. He answered on the second ring, and said he would be happy to answer any questions I had. He had already heard that Viktor had been found murdered.

Mr. Rambo told me that he met Viktor Gunnarsson in 1985 at the Royal Viking Hotel in Copenhagen. Viktor was “vacationing” with Mr. Rambo’s daughter at the time. Then in 1989, Viktor came to the United States.

“He called me from Charlotte and invited himself to Florida. I did not invite him. He showed up on my doorstep and stayed a couple of months. He said he was between jobs, and he never offered to pay any rent.”

“I believe he was known for doing that,” I told him.

“Yes, that’s what I hear. I found out later that Viktor had used my address to get an ID.

“Viktor Gunnarsson had a friend in Germany, I know who he was, and the two of them had some kind of plan to ship Mercedes cars into the United States or something like that, but it never got off the ground. I think Viktor went as far as to have business cards made, and that’s about it. Viktor didn’t have any income, but he took a lot of leisure trips. He just sponged off people, I think. He went to Brazil and stayed two or three weeks one time.”

“Are you saying that you were suspicious of Viktor’s activities?”

“Not really. I know Viktor didn’t like drugs. But he loved to travel. He went to Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Brazil for at least three weeks, just traveling around the countries.”

“What were you doing when Viktor came to visit you in Florida?”

“I was married then. My daughter didn’t like Viktor then, and my wife didn’t want him around either. I guess he finally took the hint and left. …The last I heard from him was in 1990. I lived in Salisbury for twenty years, and then I got divorced in ’86, and that’s when I moved down here.”

“All right. What else can you tell me about Viktor Gunnarsson?” I asked.

“I understand he had his pick of the ladies in Sweden. But I haven’t seen or heard from Viktor since he left Florida that time. He never came back.”

“You said you had a daughter that Viktor was vacationing with in Copenhagen. Did she maintain contact with him?”

“That’s my daughter. She’s in college, and living in Salisbury now. My ex-wife still lives in Salisbury. When I talked to my ex-wife, she told me that Viktor had not called to talk to her in a long time.”

“…Mr. Rambo, do the initials R.M.R. mean anything to you?”

“Yes. I had a corporation named R.M.R. I owned a laundry in Salisbury, and we called it R.
