Quiet as a Mouse

Zack continued to wind his way down to deck five. He had already passed decks two and three, which were housing supplies and vehicles. Deck four, which he was winding around now, was clothing. Deck five, where the creature was located, was food.

“Sally,” Zack whispered, “what’s the update on the creature?”

“Zack, it seems likely that the entity is eating from the ship’s food supplies. It is moving, but has not moved from the same general area mid-ship for more than ten minutes.”

Good, thought Zack. It would be much easier to sneak up on an alien that was fully engaged in filling its stomach... or stomachs... or whatever it had inside of it!

“Sally, I’m approaching the deck five stairwell now and should be on the ground in a few minutes. Do you have any advice?”

Quiet whirring filled his earpiece.

“Zack, I was simply a functional computer system running this starship when the Constellation began its journey. Over the past months, I have been absorbing centuries of Earth news and literature, as my database of knowledge will be essential to this mission. I have studied battle plans from all of Earth’s many wars. However, this is an alien organism. Nothing in my database equips me to assist you in facing something so completely unknown. The only advice I can give you is to observe as much as possible without being discovered. This will enable us both to gain knowledge about the alien before engaging.”

Zack smiled. She had called it an alien. It was fun to hear Sally learning and growing.

“Okay, Sally. I’m here.”

Zack was standing on the very last step before he touched the floor of deck five. He hoped that he had been quiet enough, and that he was far enough away from the alien, that he didn’t have to worry for the moment.
