The living room was the same. Stacks of supplies for shipping were in the corner of the room, and clean laundry—fish guts, I hoped it was clean—tumbled off the sofa.

Hunter moved it to the floor beside the chair. “So, you’re going to be staying here?”

“Yes, just for a little while.” I picked up a fishhook but put it back. There wasn’t anywhere else to move it to.

Hunter nodded like he was listening to a song the rest of us couldn’t hear.

“Is that going to be a problem?” I swallowed.

“For me, no.” Hunter’s eyes flicked to the ceiling. The space that had been my room was now Tarek’s house arrest space. “I suppose you can have Sawyer’s room. He’s out on a run with everyone but Da. Authorities said two of us have to be home with Tarek at all times.” Hunter plopped into the chair next to Melody. He was a good ten years older than Melody and me. Growing up, he wasn’t around a lot. Well, none of us were, and the house showed it. No one wanted to be here. The place reeked of sad, and Paola hadn’t made it any better. No, it had become worse with her and even worse after what she’d done.

The answer to everything in the Taggart house was to leave it. My brothers volunteered to take longer cargo runs, and I’d gone to Boston for a doctorate. Out of them, I took the trophy for running. “Sawyer’s room? For the four of us?”

“Tarek and Sawyer shared, growing up.”

“Sure they did. But they had bunk beds.”

“I’m sure you’ll work it out.”

“Tarek can move in with Sawyer.”

“Nope, authorities said he has to have his own room.”

I glared at Hunter. “He can move into the small cubbies.” The house had four small sleeping cubbies, closets with beds and curtains for privacy.

“Has to have a door.” Hunter bit into an apple with gusto.

“Let me guess, the authorities?”

Hunter cocked a smile at me. “Right as rain.” He was having a little too much fun. Unfortunately, I had been home on holiday when Paola and Tarek mated. Sawyer had moved in with Hunter. But then Paola complained that my fathers didn’t have a mate, so they each moved into a cubby. When I’d visited before the Taylor incident, they were back in their old room, and some of the regular amount of discomfort was back. I wasn’t about to kick them out of their room. Melody wouldn’t want to, either.

In the grand scheme of things, it didn’t matter. We just needed a bed to sleep in if we couldn’t be together tonight.

Melody put her hand on my shoulder. It’s fine. We’ll be fine.

I know. I know. It’s just . . . .

Harrison. It’s not like I’ve never met your brothers or your dads. I understand the pain and everything that’s going on. Don’t worry about it. She hugged me.

Okay, thank you. I love you.

I love you too.

I looked up at Hunter just watching us. He scoffed. “I’m going down to the pub.
