Chapter 8
Cesar Alvarez opened the door a crack and peered through. The dim light from the fireplace hit him from behind, shadowing his face. His unfriendly expression turned to confusion as he recognized his former employer.
âRaul? What are you doing here?â he asked. He opened the door wider and motioned them to come in. âSorry, I donât get visitors. Have a seat.â
Raul looked around the cozy, rustic space. It was open, with the entire living area in one room. The fireplace in one corner radiated heat to the whole cabin. A double bed stood in the opposite corner, a mound of quilts jumbled on top. The rest of the room consisted of a sink with a small counter, a small round table with two chairs and a couple of armchairs with a footstool. Books lined the built-in shelves on either side of the fireplace. A ladder near the kitchen led to a loft in the ceiling.
Raul sat at the table, while Cesar and Alda took the armchairs.
âIt looks great, man. Youâve done a lot since the last time I was here,â Raul said. Alda seemed mesmerized by Cesar, and hadnât taken her eyes off of him since they first arrived.
âThanks, I did it all myself. Itâs my chance to get away from the world,â Cesar answered. He looked curiously at Alda. âBut it seems youâre bringing the world to me. Is she your mate?â
âYes.â
Alda coughed and her eyes widened.
âNo!â she exclaimed. âI canât have a mate!â
Anger and denial rose in Raul. Both he and his wolf were ready to howl in protest. Was it possible that Alda didnât know that they were fated? Something was holding his dragoness back, and he was going to find out what it was.
She was his, and nothing and no one would take her away from him. The pain of living without his mate once heâd found her would be too much to endure. He would spend his life with an empty void that no other person could fill.
His father had once confided that his mother hadnât been his true mate. He had liked her, and had settled down with her because he had wanted a family. His mother had known and after eighteen years, she had left because she had wanted more, a true emotional connection that she hadnât gotten from Roger. Roger had never blamed her, and knew it had been the right choice for her.
âI see the issueâs not settled yet,â Cesar said to Raul with a warning tone, âSome things never change; dragonesses are on a whole other level.â
âThanks for the advice. But weâre not here for that,â Raul said. âThis is Alda; sheâs come a long way to find you.â
Cesar turned to Alda, now slightly wary. âIs that so? I havenât had much dealings with dragons, and what I did have, didnât turn out very well,â he said.
âMy name is Esmeralda, but on the mainland, I call myself Alda Drague. Iâm from an island inhabited by female dragon shifters. I believe youâve heard of it?â Alda asked.
