“Your dad is kind of mean,” Kate said as she watched Tessa blast her brother and his friends with the garden hose. They leaped off the house and onto the garage as nimbly as real cats, and then up a big pine tree. Once there, they scurried higher and higher until the water couldn’t reach them. Safe but angry, they hissed and screeched at the girls.

“This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen,” Tessa said.

“This is just another day at my house,” Kate replied. “So how do we get them out of the tree?”

“Call the fire department?” Tessa asked.

“Seriously? How are we going to explain this? ‘Hello, my brother and his weird friends are infected with space cooties. Can you bring a ladder?’ ”

“Then we have to be patient. When Stevie climbs into our tree, we have to wait until she wants to come down.”

“Someone’s going to notice three kids meowing their heads off,” Kate said.

“We could try to lure them down with food,” Tessa said.

“Sure,” Kate said, “but what’s to stop them from eating it and climbing back up? If they come down, we need to make sure they stay down. Plus, we have to find a way to corral them back into the house.”

“What’s that look on your face?” Tessa asked.

“I just had an idea,” Kate said. “C’mon, I need your help picking up some old friends.”

Kate found the bags of unicorn stuff where she’d left them on the curb. Together, the girls dragged them into the backyard, then arranged them into two rows from the big tree to the back door, creating a path in the center. It wasn’t easy—the bags were crazy heavy—but together, they managed. When the path was finished, they sat in the grass to rest.

“I can’t believe you threw it all out,” Tessa said, gesturing to the bags. “Now I really feel bad.”

“You didn’t have to call me a baby,” she said.

“Actually, I said Unicorn Magic was babyish. One of the main characters is named Apple Dumpling.”

“Fine. The show is dumb,” Kate admitted. “But I could have given it up. I could have given up the Cornies, too.”

“See, even the club name is—”

“I know!” Kate said. “I’m just saying my love for unicorns is not a reason for all of my friends to dump me. Why didn’t you talk to me? I probably would have said that you suck, but I deserved a chance. You guys just threw me away. I might as well be in one of these bags.”

“That’s a little dramatic,” Tessa said. “I don’t know, Kate. Maybe we were scared. We didn’t know what to say, and maybe we knew we were wrong.”

The girls sat on the lawn for a long time without saying anything. Kate felt her anger fade away. She was happy Tessa was there. It was nice to have someone to talk to about the crazy things in her life.

“C’mon,” Kate said. She led her friend into the garage. Leaning in the corner was her father’s fishing rod.
