“Write a poem to your little plant,” Bernice tells me. “Put a festive cloth over your computer.” She is urging me to get playful.

When I get playful, I have again a childlike faith and that faith tells me that I can edge ahead. “Think little, get little, be little,” I urge myself. Big things are accomplished by many, many tiny strokes. If you cannot right now take in the big picture, try taking in the little picture. Try to just do the next right thing. And what is the next right thing?

So many memories come flooding back to me. As I lie in bed, not sleeping, I have a hit parade of thoughts that all turn toward the dramatic. I remember being sick before and how very frightened it made me. If I am to avoid becoming sick again, I need to cling to the simplest of thoughts, “Just don’t drink, just don’t kill yourself from despair.” One more time I just need to put in time, to go forward a crumb at a time. I have been here before and survived it. I will be able to survive this, too. My humor will return and with humor will come strength.

Gardens start with seeds. Seeds are tiny and look like nothing much. And yet, it is from seeds that we get blooms and from blooms that we get hope. Hope is what tells us that if we just keep going a day at a time we will be led. Hope is what tells us that there is always a tiny something that is possible, some place for God to meet us.
