Foxes, ghosts and stones

I am a fox now and I live in the woods at the back of our house.

I metamorphosed when you buried me but instead of turning to earth, I grew hair and teeth and a tail.

Sometimes I come close enough to the house and listen to you and I’m sad I’m not inside with my family.

But then I’m glad to be a fox.

You spotted me one day as I ran up the lawn, big, like a dog.

And you called everyone to see me because you knew my soul.

The woods are mine and you sometimes see my tracks.

I leave my mark for you.

I know you look for me and it breaks my heart to hide.

But that is my nature.

I’m always here and I know that you know I am watching.

That is enough for me.
