Chapter Ten

THEY ended up staying at the ranch for the day. Stoney took Mason’s phone, and Mason went to pretend that he didn’t have problems and clients waiting for him, that Noah wasn’t a billionaire with more power and personality and wealth than he’d ever have, and they went to have a picnic up in the mountains, complete with basket, blanket, and beer.

They sat together after they ate the fried chicken and coleslaw and potato salad Geoff made for them, holding hands and playing twenty questions about each other’s life.

“You seriously were in a motorcycle gang?” Mason stared over at Noah, wide-eyed. “That’s either cool or terrifying.”

“I know, right? My wild days are long over.” That quirky little smile on Noah’s lips told Mason the man was pretty proud of his past.

“I’m not wild. I grew up in Denver, went to Colorado State, got a job in Aspen, and have been here ever since.”

“We were dirt poor when I was little, but then Daddy found a business he could do, and we moved up slow but sure until I struck oil.” Noah picked at a bunch of grapes. “Now I work all the time. Does that sound whiny?”

“No. It seems like that way. The more successful you are, the crazier life gets. I mean, I’m not successful like you are, but I get it on the small scale.”

“You run yourself ragged. You did say you hadn’t done anything on the scale of Sammy’s wedding before, but I was damned impressed.” Noah reached out to touch the back of his hand. “I didn’t want to be at first.”

“We’re supposed to be prissy assholes. That’s why I do rustic, outdoor living, and redneck events. It suits my personality.”

“It sure does.” Noah touched his wrist, then slid long, strong fingers up his arm. “I expected you to be more flamey, really.”

“I feel like I am here sometimes, but I am who I am.” And he sort of liked it, to be honest.

“That’s a good thing.” Noah moved a little closer.

“Is it?” He plucked a grape and reached to slide it over Noah’s bottom lip.

“It is. You’re strong and organized, hot as hell, and willing to go toe-to-toe with me and Old Man Preston. I need someone who can tell me to go to hell.” Noah nipped the grape out of his hand.

“I wish you weren’t going home so soon. I mean, I’m not asking you to stay. I’m not stupid. I have clients, you have a vast corporation deal, and we both have to work, but still, I’ll miss you.” Listen to him, spilling his guts like a dork. He was having a summer fling.

“Me too. I—” For a confident, übersuccessful man, Noah could sure evince uncertainty. “I want to see you again, Mason. For real.”

“Yes.” Simple as that. Yes. He reached out, then moved to straddle Noah’s thighs. “I think we have something, Noah.”

“I think we do too. Kiss me?” Noah held him in place, hands on his hips.

“I can do that.” He leaned forward, the ease of this still making shivers slide down his spine.
