Chapter 10

I guess the long night of trying to connect with Shredder must have taken more out of me than I realized. My intention was to close my eyes for just a few minutes, but when I next woke, five hours had passed. Landon was gone, but Houston assured me that he’d taken the phone with him and would continue to try to get past the extensive security.

“Why’d you let me sleep so long?” I asked Houston once I realized how much time had passed.

“You were exhausted and needed to recharge, and chances are that Shredder needed time to get his bearings as well. Did you dream about the kidnapper?”

“No.” I ran a hand through my hair. “I don’t remember dreaming at all. I’m going to take a shower and then have something to eat so that I’m fully alert. After that, I’m going to try connecting with Shredder again.”

“I think that sounds like a good idea. I called my office to let them know I was working on a lead relating to the man we found in the cabin but would come in if they needed me. Once you’ve had a chance to shower and eat, you and I will sit down and come up with a strategy.”

Given the fact that I’d been able to briefly connect with Shredder before we were interrupted, I assumed I’d be able to reconnect once I had the opportunity to try again, but after hours of failed attempts, I had begun to suspect that Shredder might be dead. I knew that if I was going to find my friend, dead or alive, I needed to stay focused and try not to panic, but keeping my calm in this situation was turning out to be one of the hardest things I’d ever had to do.

“Okay, let’s evaluate where we are,” Houston said after it became apparent that reconnecting with Shredder wasn’t going to be as easy as we hoped. “We know that when you connected with him earlier, Shredder was alive. We know he’s being held by the same man who kidnapped the other three intelligence operatives, and we know that in the other three cases, the kidnapper waited at least two weeks before severing his relationship with these individuals. We know that the third kidnap victim we’re aware of was killed and left in a cabin here in Alaska. We don’t know with any degree of certainty the fate of the other two kidnap victims, but at this point, we’re assuming that they are dead.”

“All of that sounds right,” I said.

“This man seems to know you are lurking around in his head, and, based on what you’ve said, he seems intrigued by the whole thing. Amused even. In my mind, it’s possible that this man took Shredder, who he probably observed spending time with you, as a means of goading you into upping your game. While Shredder is in intelligence, and he may have been the next victim all along, it almost feels like his kidnapping had more to do with you than him.
