PRESTON

“Preston.”

Ciara’s voice lingered on the breeze like a feather dancing on the currents of the wind. Deep down, I wanted to ignore her. After all, she was the one who left without so much as a goodbye. But I knew my resolve would break sooner rather than later.

“Preston.” The urgency of her voice echoed in my ear, startling me awake. Sweat poured from my head and dripped down my face, soaking into the pillowcase. The darkness of the room added to the ominous hole in my core.

“Ciara?” I called for her. My hoarse voice stretched into the darkness like smoke flowing into the sky from a bonfire. I waited, ears perked, listening for the faintest hint of someone coming to my aid. With every passing moment, the pressure in my chest mounted, like someone stacking bricks on me to squeeze the life out of me. The air in the room was thick, but the fog in my head was thicker.

“Ciara,” I called again, straining my voice.

“Preston, help me.”

Dread replaced the anger I had chained around my heart. I hunted for the cord that bound us together to answer her plea. To let her know, I heard her. But I couldn’t find it. Confusion crashed through me and jumbled everything. There was only one image that flashed through my head.

Cyrus.

I thrashed against the restraints pinning me to the bed and closed my eyes, trying to summon every ounce of strength I had.

“Please, I have to get to Ciara. She needs me. She’s in trouble,” I cried out, hoping my pleas would break the bonds around my torso and wrists. But the more I struggled, the tighter the ropes got. It was like the ropes were boa constrictors squeezing the life from their prey.

I gulped the air as the room dissolved like sugar in hot water.

“Preston? Are you all right? I thought this is what you wanted me to do.”

My eyes flew open. Ciara’s icy blue eyes bore into me. Her raven hair framed her face as she hovered over me, her fingers curled around my wrists. My heart quickened at the sight of her bare breasts.

“When did you—”

With a shake of her head, she pressed a finger to my lips. Sympathy and shame flickered across her tender features.

“It doesn’t matter,” she whispered. Ciara’s teeth grazed my ear and the heat of her body pressing against mine made me want to burst. “I’m so sorry, Preston. I didn’t mean to make you worry so.”

I swallowed hard, trying to think of anything other than the way her smooth body glided over my chest. Her breath was warm as her lips grazed down the length of my neck. Little bumps rose over my skin. The air around me turned to ice as she leaned back.

“I love you. Only you. And had I known you’d get so frantic, I would have made sure to tell you what I was doing. But I didn’t have time. There’s no time.”

“It’s fine,” I murmured, craving to have her lips crushed against my flesh again.
