Chapter Twenty-Two

Rian’s crying is heartbreaking as the doctor slaps a Band-Aid on his small limbs as if that is going to make the pain go away. They’re at the pediatrician’s office for Rian’s two-month wellness check-up and his immunizations.

Three fucking shots and one down his throat. Who the fuck sticks three needles in a two-month-old baby? As of right now, he is still contemplating ending this pediatrician where she stands. Or maybe in the parking garage when her practice closes.

“Derrick,” Stella chides him as if she knows what he’s thinking. “Put the scowl away,” she whispers to him. His growl comes from deep within his chest and when the doctor finishes, he is all but ready to step in and dress his son.

“You’re okay, son. You’re okay,” he says softly, kissing Rian’s head and dressing him.

The doctor speaks to Stella now and gives her instructions. He tries to listen but Rian’s crying and quivering bottom lip are too heartbreaking to ignore. He hears the word fever and is already getting heated again. Well, of course, the baby might develop a fever. He just fucking took three shots! Two in one fucking leg!

Mason, he thinks to himself. Mason can get him this pediatrician’s address in mere minutes.

Dr. Needle-Fingers finally leaves the room and like a good boy, Rian begins to calm down. He wipes his son’s tears away and buttons up the last button on the baby’s shirt before he picks him up and cradles him.

“I don’t like her,” he says to Stella.

“She’s just doing her job,” Stella tells him.

She comes over and pats Rian’s head softly before giving the baby a kiss. She’s standing so close that his senses are going haywire, just like every other time she’s near enough for him to smell her intoxicating scent.

“Can we stop at the pharmacy?” she asks. “I don’t have any baby Tylenol at home and he might need it.”

“Yeah.”

“I think he’s calm enough to put him back in his carrier now,” she says.

He walks over and gently puts Rian in the carrier. Reluctantly. Rian is still sniffling, his eyes red from the tears.

An accident, he continues thinking. He can make it look like the doctor drove into a tree. Or off a cliff. No…needles, he changes his mind. She can have an accidental poisoning by a needle. Now THAT might be satisfying.

“Stop it,” Stella says to him. Fuck! He hates that she knows. How the hell did he ever get anything past her before? “He needs them to stay healthy.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he murmurs, following her out the door.

“Next time, Brooks is coming in with me,” she scolds him.

The nurse at the desk hands Stella the baby’s next appointment card and he’s tempted to ask if Rian will be receiving more shots at that time. Because if so, he’ll come prepared.

They step outside the doctor’s office with him carrying the baby’s carrier. It’s starting to rain and a raindrop lands on his son’s face. He feels the slight jolt of surprise and finds Rian smiling a toothless smile.
