If someone told Freya she’d have to live in The Old Stables for the rest of her life it wouldn’t have bothered her. Ellie really had thought of everything when she’d had the stables converted, including a state-of-the-art coffee machine and satellite television. If there was any way to convince herself that Christmas could still come right, after everything that had happened, it was the stream of feel-good movies on one of the satellite channels. No matter the odds, and how close to Christmas the characters’ lives fell apart, it all came good in time for the twenty-fifth of December. Sadly, real life wasn’t like a Hallmark movie, and good things didn’t happen just because you wished for them. She couldn’t do anything about making sure Auntie Linda and Uncle Dave got to Australia and back safely, but she could set about making her only other wish come true.

With another feel-good movie playing in the background, and Ginger snoring softly beside her, Freya switched on her laptop and opened the email from her aunt, clicking on the photos to download them without even reading the email. Uncle Dave had done a great job. Not only had he scanned in the photograph, but he’d added an enlarged version of just the man her mum had been hugging in the original picture. Staring at the image, Freya took in his features, trying to find a likeness. Did he have the same small kink in the cartilage of his ear as she did? The one that her mum had always assured her was barely noticeable. Maybe their similarities would turn out to be something less physical, like the way they laughed, or the fact she couldn’t eat strawberries without coming out in a rash.

Saving the photographs, Freya scrolled up to the top of the email to see whether her aunt had anything else to say.

Dear Freya,

I hope the pictures are okay. Uncle Dave thought you might want one of just Colin, in case you want to ask around without giving the game away that it’s linked to your mum. We really hope you find him, but I know part of the reason your mum never told you was because she knew you would want to find him, and she was scared you’d feel rejected if he didn’t want a relationship. We’re praying that won’t be the case, but we don’t want you hurt again either. Like I said when you first found out, you need to keep in mind that it might not end the way you want, even if you do find him.

Don’t be cross, but I’ve forwarded on the email that Sophie sent me below. If you don’t want to read it, that’s fine, but I wanted to give you the chance to change your mind before we left for Australia.

Love you millions,

Auntie Linda xx
