And that was what we did — crisscrossing downtown so Destiny could visit as many museums and shops as she liked, with all of us trooping over to the bar at the Rio Chama restaurant on Old Santa Fe Trail afterward and getting one of the tables next to the fireplace there. It was a cold, brisk day, with clouds coming and going overhead, and a certain sharp feel to the air that my half-sister claimed might be snow on the way.

The rest of us had to take her at her word, since Audrey and Rosemary and I were Southern California natives and therefore didn’t have much experience with snow beyond the occasional trip to visit Big Bear or Lake Arrowhead or whatever. But while I thought snow was pretty, and had some wistful daydreams about what it would be like to snuggle up against Isaac on the couch while a fire burned in the hearth and we shared a bottle of wine and a pizza as snow fell outside, I didn’t much like the idea of dealing with snow while fighting demons.

I had enough on my plate as it was.

When we emerged from the restaurant, the day had gotten darker, the clouds thickening overhead, but I didn’t see any white flakes drifting down from the skies. I was very glad of my warm wool coat, though, and made sure it was buttoned up to my throat before we headed back to Isaac’s house.

By that point, it was a little after two, and there wasn’t any time left for shopping. I’d bought a few things for Destiny on my credit card — over her protests, until I pointed out that it wasn’t a very good idea for purchases from Santa Fe shops to show up on her own debit card, which she’d brought with her when she fled her grandmother’s house. We didn’t know for sure whether Virginia Powers would be tracking her that way, but I figured it was better not to find out.

Those arguments had quelled my half-sister’s protests, although she’d mumbled something about paying me back one day. I honestly didn’t care about the money, and if we’d been alone, I might have said something about the large chunk of cash my father had given me after I split from my ex, or added that I’d also received Dave’s life insurance payout and the survivor’s benefits from his job at the Rancho Cucamonga P.D.

But because Rosemary and Audrey were right there, I thought it better not to mention those little tidbits. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust them with the information, and more that, since we were so newly acquainted, I didn’t see the reason to go into all those details about the state of my finances.

“About time,” Michael remarked as we entered the house, but Audrey only grinned and stood on her toes so she could kiss him on the cheek.

“We’ve still got almost forty-five minutes,” she told him. “Which is more than enough time to get ready.
