“All we can do is try, right? Listen, tomorrow night, I’m fixing a big Christmas Eve dinner, and you can join us. My parents are coming, and we plan to eat around six. Why don’t you show up a little early so you and Trev have some time to talk?”

“I guess we can try it your way.” He looked down at the floor and shook his head wiping at his eyes again. “Thank you.”

“It’s no problem, really.” She went back around the counter, poured a coffee into a to-go cup, and filled a small paper bag with an assortment of pastries.

“Now take these for the road.”

He bowed his head as if ashamed and held his hands out in front of him. “I couldn’t take advantage of your kindness again, my dear. And unfortunately I don’t think I can pay for all of those wonderful pastries.”

“Families take care of one another Mr. McKenna, and you’re Trevor’s family. I want you to take these things from me, and I want you to take this as well.” As she said those words, she hit a button that opened the cash drawer and handed him twenty dollars. “It isn’t much, but it might help a little if you’re on a tight budget. You need to eat to keep your strength up. Do you have somewhere to stay?”

“Yes I do. I can’t thank you enough for your kindness. If I have the chance to spend one more Christmas with my son, it will be like a dream come true.”

“I’m happy to help. Now you better go. Trevor’ll be coming down any minute.”

He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek for good measure, then turned and headed for the door. As he went, he called back over his shoulder “Merry Christmas.” Then he walked through the door and out to his car, smiling as he looked at the twenty-dollar bill in his hand. He needed a hell of a lot more to keep the loan sharks off his back, but this was good for a pack of smokes and a couple of scratch-offs.

And now she thought he was sick. Man, she was gullible. She ate all of that sappy crap right up. If it didn’t work out with Trevor, this girl would probably hand him the money, no problem. He had a smile on his face as he drove away, thinking all of this had gone better than he’d planned. He couldn’t wait to see the look on his son’s face when he showed up for Christmas Eve dinner. He would fork over whatever he had to get him out of there. The kid had always been ashamed of his dad. He pulled a smoke from his pocket and lit it up. He loved it when Lady Luck was on his side.
