Step 6

Know Your Business

Okay. . . . Got it. . . . I should be able to be there on Thursday evening. Hey, thank you for your help.”

Austin hung up the phone as Brooklyn was dragging herself into the kitchen. Her eyes were squinting, adjusting to the light. It was 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

“Who in the world were you talking to?” Brooklyn asked. She noticed that the coffeepot contained a fresh batch of coffee. “And thank you for making the coffee.” She opened a cabinet above their counter and reached for a mug.

“That was Cary,” answered Austin.

Brooklyn yawned. “What was so important that you had to talk to him this early?” She poured her coffee, added a bit of creamer, and sat down at their small round kitchen table.

“He sent me a text last night,” replied Austin. “He said he had a few ideas for me, lessons he had learned. Plus, he had someone I might be able to help. Early morning was the only time he could talk today.”

Brooklyn started looking for bread. Her regular breakfast was fairly ordinary—coffee and toast. “Have you seen the bread?”

“I think it’s by the chips in the cupboard.”

Austin pulled out his laptop and placed it on the kitchen table. “Cary said that one of the first things we need to do is consider what type of business we are.”

“What type of business we are at 6:00 a.m. in the morning?” questioned Brooklyn.

Austin took out his computer and began typing. “It doesn’t have to be complicated. And it might help us save money on our taxes.”

Brooklyn looked at Austin as she placed two slices of bread in the toaster. “Austin, we barely have any taxes. Remember, we don’t make that much money.”

Austin had to agree. They never really owed much, if anything, for taxes.

“Well, we still need to set up and track everything correctly,” noted Austin. “Since this is more than a hobby for us, we’ll both be sole proprietors.”

Brooklyn held up her arms. “Look at me! I’m a businesswoman! At 6:00 a.m.!”

Austin smiled. “You’re about to be.”

The toast popped up. Brooklyn placed the slices on her plate. “So, who is the client Cary was giving you?”

Austin had a slight smile. “You won’t believe it. His name is Ben. I knew him in high school. And God had actually been placing him on my heart. I don’t know why, but I can’t help but think this has something to do with it.”

Brooklyn took a sip of coffee. “Wow. Strong coffee.”

“Good coffee is chewable coffee,” Austin joked.

Brooklyn’s tongue hung out of her mouth. “Gross. Can you hand me some more creamer?”
