Chapter Twenty-Two

Wren and Brantley dumped their fries and drinks in the trash, walked outside, and straddled their bikes.

“Feel like finishing the circle or do you just wanna go on home?” Brantley asked.

Wren rolled her eyes. “Pa-leeze. She may have got me for a minute, but I’m over it.”

Brantley smiled, then swiped up his kickstand. “Okay! Follow me.”

Instead, Wren took off first. “You follow me!” she threw over her shoulder.

They raced their way back toward 2 Mile Road, taking turns at the lead. After checking out a few more of the abuse sites and coming up empty, Brantley turned in to a gravel drive.

“What’s left?” Brantley asked as Wren pulled up beside him.

Wren took out her phone and checked the picture of the murder board list. “I think...that’s...pretty much all...except—”

Brantley stopped her. “The tortured cat.”

She raised both hands. “I wasn’t going to say anything.”

Brantley shuddered. “Sorry, I’m out for that one. You can fill me in later. Just, no—you know.”

Wren nodded. “I know. No details.”

He tilted his head and smiled. “No clues, but pretty nice day anyway, right?

“Well, except for the run-in with Her Highness.”

“Yeah...let’s not do that again.”

Wren laughed. “Agreed.” It had been a nice day. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she’d had so much fun.

Brantley laughed too, then nodded toward the other end of the long gravel drive, to a white two-story house with faded blue shutters and a detached garage that sat back off the road. “This is me. Wanna—” A front window curtain moved to the side. Brantley stood up off his bike. “Shoot.” The color in his face drained. “Never mind. My dad’s home. He wasn’t—I gotta go.” He pressed hard on his pedals, making the gravel crunch under his wheels.

Wren sat back on her bike and watched him. He dropped his bike in the front yard, tires still spinning, and hurried through the front door. Then it struck her. The bike drop, the barging in the house, was just like she’d done hundreds, if not thousands, of times. But she had Elisi there to greet her. A hug, a smile, a taste test of whatever she had on the stove, that, no matter what kind of day she’d had, automatically filled Wren with the warmth of knowing she was loved. A feeling she could now see wasn’t something to be taken for granted. And it made her wonder, What was waiting for Brantley, behind his front door?

She had to do something. She wasn’t sure what, but as she steered her bike back onto the street toward the last crime scene, she was sure of one thing. He deserved better.
