This same defensiveness also underlies the common anxiety in Western Muslim communities to present a unified front. It is as though the situation is one of rival tribes, where unity is a show of strength, and any hint of division is death. What is less often understood is just how dangerous this fake veneer of unity is in the present environment. We live in an age where, fairly or unfairly, the dominant images surrounding Islam and Muslim populations are manifestly ugly. A rigid determination to appear united (which usually ends up meaning homogenous) does little more than unify masses of Muslims with that ugliness … That many Muslims are so desperate to fit within this unhealthy category for the sake of some phoney ‘strength’, particularly when the reality is exactly the opposite, is evidence of a thoroughly defensive posture.
