Chapter Nine

At work the next day, I was regretting coming in. Jess and Matt were both clearly desperate to know what had happened between me and Aaron, but I wasn’t ready to talk about our night. Not yet.

We’d watched the sunset from the top of Mount Tamalpais before heading back down to San Francisco. Aaron had taken me to a quiet bar, where we’d spent the rest of the evening talking and getting to know each other. By the time he’d driven me home, I felt that I’d completely misjudged him. There was so much more to Aaron than I’d initially thought. Sure, he still had that arrogance that marked an alpha shifter, but then so did Caleb. In addition, Aaron was witty and charming and romantic - and hot as hell.

If only he’d come into my life sooner. But he hadn't, and no matter what you do, you can't change the past. What I had with Caleb was everything I'd always wanted. More than that even. And yet, there I was, thinking about another man. There was just so many “what ifs” swirling around in my brain after our date.

And no matter how hard I pushed them away, they kept coming back. Stronger and more persistent.

“Excuse me, miss?” a girl's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. Thankfully. “Are you Shelby Roberts?”

“I am,” I said, smiling pleasantly at the young woman. “How can I help you?”

“Oh, nothing for me, thanks,” she said. “I have something for you. A delivery.”

She handed over a small, wrapped box. I looked at it curiously and saw that the tag had my name on it, written in a neat, elegant hand.

“What is this?” I asked, admiring the Tiffany blue wrapping with the white polka dotted bow.

“It's a gift from somebody named Aaron Love,” she said as she checked her manifest. “I just need you to sign here, please.”

I took the electronic device from her hand and used the stylus to scrawl my name, my hands shaking so badly it looked more like a squiggly line than an actual signature, and handed it back to her. She gave me a smile and told me to have a nice day as she turned and departed.

I could barely contain my excitement as I unwrapped the package, expecting jewelry. When I opened the box though, instead of jewelry, I found some chocolate truffles and a photograph.

With a slight tremble in my hand, I picked up the picture and stared at it for a second, not quite comprehending what I was seeing, before it all clicked.

It was a photo that had obviously been taken last night – a photo of Aaron and me dancing. He had his arms wrapped around my waist, holding me close and we were staring into each other's eyes deeply. The expressions on our faces made it look like nothing else mattered in the world to us but each other.

Santino must have taken the photo while we were dancing.

On the back, there was a handwritten note that made my heart flutter.
