Each of these could lead to quite different themes which is why they were referred to as being “in general terms”. For instance, Addiction could be about addiction to drugs or addiction to sex or even addiction to a hobby. Betrayal could be of one’s country or one’s wife or husband.

The author who wishes to explore a theme will obviously choose an issue which is felt strongly. It would probably be unwise to choose something from this list and decide to write a story containing the theme. It is more likely a good idea to let a theme arise from characters in a particular situation or story rather fit a story and characters to a particular theme.

It was pointed out above that novels and stories should not preach or moralise. The exception to this is the fable. To point out a moral is the fable’s purpose. Likewise parables are created to point out a moral or message. Modern writers, of course, are unlikely to be writing fables or parables. Some writers do moralise, and in the past it was quite common, especially in stories for children, for the writer to moralise on some issue. Now, it is frowned upon.

To decide to base a novel on a theme is probably inadvisable, or at least it is not a good idea to make the theme the starting point. If this is the genesis of the story, theme is likely to dominate the plot and characters. Ideally a theme will arise from considering human beings (characters) and their concerns.
