Mimi lived for the unexpected. When she’d flown to Minneapolis to be with Noah, she couldn’t believe she was still dithering about whether or not to accept Noah’s marriage proposal—when he finally made it. But of course she would accept. He was perfect for her. The more she thought about the few minutes she’d spent with him yesterday, the clearer it became. He was fighting his feelings, for sure, but it was only a matter of time before he realized how much he loved her, that he couldn’t go on living without her. That was why she’d boarded a plane last night, landing in New York just after ten. She’d taken a taxi to the theater district and booked a room overlooking Times Square at her favorite hotel, the Marriott Marquis. She stayed up all night watching the lights outside her window. She was too amped to sleep.

This morning, after downing an entire pot of coffee, she’d taken a cab to Bergdorf’s. Who knew the store didn’t open until eleven? What sort of business practice was that? Forced to walk the streets, she eventually found herself talking to a cruise ship agent at a tiny storefront several blocks away. The moment the man began explaining about an opportunity to book a last-minute thirty-five-day Mediterranean adventure cruise, she knew it was just what she and Noah wanted. Thirty-five glorious days all to themselves. She bought tickets right there, on the spot.

By the time she returned to Bergdorf Goodman, the doors were mercifully open. She hurried up to the bridal department and, after some deliberating, purchased a couture Marchesa gown. She asked for it to be overnighted to her hotel in Minneapolis, just in case Noah popped the question before they returned to California. In fact, she saw no reason to return home at all.

Landing back at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International shortly before three, the cruise tickets tucked safely in her purse, Mimi was riding high. A whirlwind trip to New York was just what the doctor ordered. She hated puns, but laughed anyway. What Mimi craved more than anything was excitement. Warp speed was pure joy, the solution to her problems. Drugs couldn’t make a woman healthy and happy, they just made her numb.

Returning to the Maxfield West, Mimi ran herself a bath. While it was filling, she stripped off her clothes and stood in front of the mirror. She’d left last night without a suitcase or even an overnight bag. She was a woman on a mission and couldn’t be bothered with silly preparations, like bringing a toothbrush or even makeup. But now that she was back, she needed to groom herself for a night of lovemaking. She called Noah, left him a message, and then sank down into the hot water, allowing it to ease the tension in her muscles.

The only problem was, the longer she spent soaking in the tub, the more she began to grow sluggish and dull. She felt like a balloon with a slow leak.

“No,” she said, pressing her fists to her eyes.
