In the underworld he is immersed in water up to his neck while tree branches bearing luscious fruit hang above him. When he bends to drink the water it drains away, and when he reaches to pluck the fruit it moves beyond his reach. Hence the word “tantalize.” See also Oration 39.5 and my first note on the paragraph. 95 Matt 21.31. 96 Matt 11.12. 97 Prov 1.11. 98 Ps 94.1. 99 Mic 4.2. 100 Matt 11.28. 101 John 14.31. 102 Lam 4.7. 103 John 20.3–4. 104 Rom 13.
