I submit to you that it didn’t have to take 40 years. But their words – their grumbling and complaining – spoke louder than any possible redemptive actions. See, it works both ways. Actions can speak louder than words, but actions come out of the heart. Actions that spring out of the wrong motive are not fruit meet for repentance. Actions that don’t spring from a love of God and desire to please Him aren’t sustainable.

In other words, you can’t keep up the good show forever. And why would you want to? Why would you want to fake it in the Kingdom and let your bones dry out even as you walk down the broad path that leads to destruction when you could sell out and have fire shut up in your bones as you walk the narrow path that leads to life?
