“Hey! I’m glad you stopped by,” Alessia said warmly as she wiped down a table.

Robyn put one hand on the hip of her green corduroy jumper. “Like I was going to stay away, considering what you’ve just been through. I feel bad that I couldn’t come by earlier. It’s been kind of a hectic day at the office.”

“Eh, no problem. I’m fine. I’m just glad it’s over with.” Alessia moved with ease behind the counter. It was almost closing time, and she’d had a fantastic day. Everything in the bakery had been running so smoothly, and she loved it.

“How could you possibly be all right?” Robyn argued. She had her hair swept up into a curled ponytail that day, looking like she’d stepped right out of the sixties. “I’m not even sure you should be at work.”

Alessia glanced around the shop to make sure there weren’t any customers around. The afternoon hours were always a bit slow, except for a few folks who stopped in for an after-lunch coffee, and the dining room was empty at the moment. “Actually, I’m really glad I’m here. I feel amazing! It’s like this experience has given me a new lust for life. I’ve got more focus, energy, and motivation, and it’s showing. I even overheard a conversation between a couple of women who come in here all the time. They were talking about how much the pastries have improved this week, and they were wondering if Nonna herself had come back to work! How great is that?”

“Wow. If getting held hostage is that good for you, then I guess every woman should put it on their bucket list,” Robyn joked. “Even your skin is glowing. I’d call it denial, otherwise.”

As Alessia handed Robyn a caramel cappuccino, she remembered what Kent had said about shifters being everywhere. Was Robyn one of them? Would she have any way of knowing? She’d been friends with Robyn for a long time, but she’d never thought of either her or herself as anything but ‘normal.’ Alessia clamped her lips around her questions and went back to work, preparing things for the next day so her morning would be a breeze.

“I think I just needed a swift kick in the ass, you know? Something to make me realize my life is worth more than I’ve been giving it credit for.” She smiled, determined not to let even the smallest bit of doubt creep in. It really had been a good day, better than she’d had in a long time.

“Okay. Just promise me you’ll call if you need anything. I’m here for you.”

“I will, thanks. Have a great night!” Alessia felt warm and pleasant as she finished closing the bakery. She wiped down a table where she’d overheard a conversation about whether or not a couple would go for fertility treatments. It was a private matter, spoken in low voices that she wasn’t supposed to hear, just like she wasn’t supposed to have heard the other women talking about how great the pastries were.
