CHAPTER NINETEEN

Connor and Logan followed them to the exit, then to the obscure turnoff that led to the elders’ compound. By the time they got to the end of a narrow road and it opened up to a small town, Kayleigh had wondered if Maddox was leading them on a wild goose chase and would actually stop somewhere and bury her brother and his partner’s bodies. But they came to a stop in front of a small general store where Archer waited with an older man who didn’t look happy.

Maddox tensed next to Kayleigh, and she rested a hand on his forearm, the muscles rock hard under his skin. “We’ve got this, Maddox.”

He glanced at her and gave a quick nod, a hint of gratitude in his eyes. She wondered when the last time had been that someone had his back for more than Pack issues. When was the last time he’d let someone in on an emotional level? She had had her parents, her brothers, her entire pack shoring her up. Who had had Maddox’s back? She knew he had the loyalty of his pack and his Beta and Third, but she didn’t think he opened up to them emotionally.

They both got out of the car and were joined by Connor and Logan. The older man next to Archer scowled at them. “You said the Alpha was coming. You never said anything about three strangers with him.”

Archer didn’t reply, just looked at Maddox, who kept a firm gaze on the older man. “Kayleigh is the potential Luna for the Pack, and I know Archer told you about her. The others were an unexpected addition. Is that a problem, Stanley?”

The man tried to hold Maddox’s gaze, but it slid away after a moment, Maddox’s dominance and his status as Alpha too much for the older man to withstand. Archer gave a subtle nod to Maddox and sidled away, his duty done.

“Thank you, Archer. Can you stay and help our guests get settled into an empty cabin?”

Stanley’s eye widened. “You can’t be housing strangers with us. It isn’t right.”

Maddox leveled a hard stare at the older man. “I’m the Alpha and can do as I please. We’ll discuss it with the other elders in the meeting hall. Please gather them.”

Stanley stomped away, grumbling just loud enough for them all to hear. “Just like his father. Arrogant and demanding. He should have never been allowed to take the position.”

Maddox flinched but said nothing. Anger burned in Kayleigh’s gut at the blatant disrespect. Her father often allowed the elders to speak more freely than most wolves but this went beyond that to insulting. She wasn’t going to tolerate that, not if she was going to be Luna.

Kayleigh took a few steps forward before Maddox could stop her and raised her voice. “Excuse me, Elder. Is that how you speak to your Alpha? The man who protects you, houses you, and cares for you? If you have something to say, have the courtesy and the courage to speak to his face, not.
