Fifteen

Alex trudged through the depths of Claymore at Jericho’s side. An unexpected rainstorm forced them to enter the mansion through the underground garage. Her aching feet protested the longer route, and the hallway stretched out like a carnival funhouse.

She tugged Jericho’s jacket closer around her shoulders, grimacing. Jimmy Choo had an eye for style—not comfort. Her panicked dash had loosened one of the glittery straps, and it slopped along the back of her heel.

“How are you holding up?” Jericho asked, studying her tight expression.

“I’m fine,” she reassured him—for the hundredth time. She noticed he walked closer than necessary, ready to catch her just in case she went swooning-damsel on him again. Yep, that’s me, delicate freaking flower. And in front of Colin, no less. She’d never hear the end of it.

He exhaled. “Alex, you passed out. Perhaps Doc should look you over before we meet with Victor.”

“I already told you,” she said through gritted teeth, “I did not pass out. I just…got a little woozy.” And the tiny slice she’d made on her palm was hardly worthy of a Band-Aid.

“If by woozy you mean you collapsed in my arms and didn’t come to until we were halfway to Claymore, then yes, I suppose you were woozy,” he agreed with a snort.

“Okay, fine. Maybe I passed out for a minute or two. It still doesn’t require a trip to medical.” A shrink possibly, but not a visit to Doc Randall. It wasn’t every day you looked down and found your worst nightmare sprawled at your feet. Even dead, the rogue’s blood-red eyes seemed to burn right through her.

“This meeting with Victor shouldn’t take long. I’ll try to keep it brief.” His deep voice rumbled with concern.

Alex cringed. “Right. It shouldn’t take long to report that my first official assignment was a complete failure. You can’t get much worse than a rampaging crowd and a rogue attack. Talk about horrible timing.”

“Mmm.”

She arched a brow. “‘Mmm’? I don’t like the sound of that.” After a moment of telling silence, she asked, “It wasn’t a coincidence that the rogue was there moments before the meeting, was it?”

“We’re…looking into it.”

The ominous lack of detail was far from comforting. She shivered and burrowed deeper into his jacket. The silk lining caressed her bare skin, just as it had when she slid her arms around Jericho on the dance floor.

Thank God he came for her when he did. She’d been seconds from a total meltdown. Despite the progress she’d made, the moment Colin turned her loose, she was overwhelmed. So many writhing bodies surrounded her, brushing against her, blocking her escape.

Then there was Jericho, and everything was all right. Even in that moment of absolute panic, part of her had known he would come for her—expected it even.

It had felt good counting on him. Too good.

“Hey, you still with me? You’re not getting woozy again, are you?” His voice registered from a distance.

“Hmm?” Wait. What did he say? She shoved her thoughts into focus. “No. I’m not woozy.
