Every bone aches, on fire, like my wolf wants to shift but she can’t. It’s not a matter of if she wants to, she just can’t. My heart shatters behind my ribs, legs burn. Sucking in icy air has my lungs on fire but the squeals and shrieks on our trail force us forward.

Try again, love… Cooper urges. Even in my head, he sounds out of breath.

A rush of heat fills my arms and legs, pools in my chest but it all just aches and pulses with the need to shift.

I can’t. She can’t do it.

Cooper’s fingers wrap tighter to mine, tugging me behind him. He hasn’t let go of my hand since he found it. I can’t keep up this pace. Not half-human. Everything hurts. My thighs are burning and numb. The cold has well and good set in the weaker my wolf gets from pushing so hard. I’m starting to catch every root and rock in the ground and stumbling over them.

Carver?

I need his voice. If just to know he’s still back there.

Keep going.

It’s a small relief but we’re exposed in every direction and I can’t force my wolf to heed the demand. Why is she being a bitch? Kind of don’t want to die because she’s deciding now is a good time to be extra defiant. Curse being a half-breed.

I trip and stumble over my own feet and fight to catch my breath.

“Coop…”

An arm wraps around me to drag me to my feet.

“Gotta keep going, Berk.”

My body isn’t cooperating. It’s all working against me. I can’t figure it out. But I push it harder because the alternative isn’t an option.

Just a little—

Cooper’s voice stops short with a grunt and his hand rips out of mine. My stomach twists and plummets.

“Cooper?” I call out but it’s only the wind, cold, and shrieking Ferals in the distance.

What happened? Carver demands.

“Cooper!”

Berkeley?

Panic seeps through me.

Baby, can you hear me? Tell me if you can hear me?

I shake my head as if he can see me. The wind alone blots out any voices that might be calling out. If he’s yelling, I can’t hear him.

Sound off. Something, Berkeley. I can feel you but I can’t fucking see shit to get to you.

I suck in a breath, but before I can get his name out a hand slaps over my mouth and my back slams into a tree, knocking the air out of me. A face invades mine, so close there’s no missing it.

“Can he hear me, baby?” A razor-sharp, fanged smile grows wide on his lips. “Tell me he can hear me…”

The red in his eyes is deeper since I saw him last. They almost seem to glow.

Berkeley, answer me.

“Oh, baby.” He drags a finger down the side of my face without moving his hand from my mouth. “I’ve really missed you.”

Berkeley!

Tristan…

Where are you!

Tears burn cold in my vision.

“We’re going to have so much fun together.”

I love you…

Pain explodes in my temple; the last thing I hear and feel is Carver’s raw rage before it all goes black.
