NINETEEN

We exited the ruins through a back door into a heavily wooded area. There was less sunlight here, but that also could’ve meant night was approaching. How long had I been there, anyway? Dread crept in as I thought about Henry and Sarah discovering that I was gone, too. I hoped they wouldn’t do anything too drastic. I just needed them to take care of my horses until I returned.

I fought my way through the undergrowth in my struggle to keep up with Fallon, who was barely making a noise as she weaved her way between the trees. Just as I reached peak anxiety over the thought of them going through my bags and finding the book and the little jar, I tripped over a root and caught myself on a tree, coughing. I was out of breath.

“Fallon, wait,” I called out. I pushed off the tree and kept going since she didn’t seem to hear me.

The light faded quicker, until only a few minutes later I was having trouble seeing where I was going. A branch tangled up in my hair and scratched my cheek when I walked into it. I freed myself and started moving again, hopeful that I was still going the right direction.

I held my eyes open wider and wider until I had to stop because everything was completely dark. With my arms stretched out in front of me, I felt around for something sturdy to hold onto. My heart was racing to keep up with my labored breathing, and I wondered if Fallon had just left me for dead. I took a breath to call out her name when a hand grabbed my arm and pulled.

Only after my boots found a sturdier surface did we stop walking. She let me go and I stood still, blinking in the dark, unable to do anything else except try to breathe through the burning in my lungs. I needed to sit down. I coughed several times and then shivered, a chill settling on my skin.

I turned around at the whoosh of a fire catching. It took only a few seconds to realize where Fallon had taken me. It almost made me laugh, if I hadn’t been so unsure of what she was going to tell me – or do to me – in the cave she brought me to. Shadows danced on every wall as the flames grew stronger. A few pieces of roughly made furniture told me that this was a place Fallon probably spent a lot of time while they were at the Seelie court. I wondered what type of space Breck had claimed for himself as I moved toward one of the chairs closer to the fire.

I watched Fallon cautiously as I sat down, keeping my back straight and legs together. I didn’t feel especially comfortable. The look on her face as she stared down into the trancing of the flames that separated us unsettled me even more. Her jaw was tight, lips pressed into a thin line.
