Chapter 22

It’s the Thought That Counts

What is it?” Felix asked, looking hard at the painting his mother had just handed him. “Well, it’s you and Phineas, of course,” his mother said.

“I think maybe it’s upside down.”

“No, it’s not,” his mother said. She pointed to the blob on the left. “That’s you.” Then she pointed to the blob on the right. “And that’s Phineas. I thought you could hang it on your wall and then it would feel like Phineas was nearby. Just like he used to be. I know how much you miss him.”

Felix looked at the blobs some more. There were two small, round points of pale blue, which he supposed might be his eyes. And there were two round points of pale green, which were approximately the color of Phineas’ eyes. Looking harder, he saw a couple lumps with five smaller, thinner lumps coming off of them, which might have been hands. “Thanks, Mom,” Felix said. “It’s great.”

“I love you, Felix,” his mom said, and wrapped her arms around him.

“I love you, too.”

Felix carried the painting up to his room. Standing on Honest Abe’s back for height, he hammered a nail into the wall and hung up the painting. He still wasn’t sure if it was right side up or upside down, but he took his best guess. He sat down on his bed and looked at it for a long time. Honest Abe stood next to him, also looking at the painting. The dog tilted his head to the side.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Felix said, patting

Honest Abe on the back, “but it’s the thought that counts.”
