Is It Falling in Love
or Growing in Love?

Mark A. Bybee
My twelve-year-old daughter came up to me one afternoon and asked if it was all right if she went with Kyle. I asked her where Kyle was going, and then I volunteered to take him wherever he wanted to go.
“Daaad,” whined Micah, “you know what I mean!”
I said I didn’t know but I was really curious to know, and asked if she would explain. From her explanation I concluded that going together meant holding hands and walking between classes together and possibly exchanging friendship rings. She said that Kyle had expressed love and caring.
Her mother and I explained to her that the only ring she could exchange was her CTR ring, and that if she chose to go with Kyle she would be going against the prophet’s counsel and would eventually need to make decisions about early dating and morality, and make other decisions that it wouldn’t be necessary to worry about if she were following the prophet. It was hard for us to do this, but we then told her that we would support her in whatever decision she made.
She went to her room, and Monica and I went to our room and fasted and prayed until Micah made her decision. Fortunately, within a half-hour she had made the decision to follow the prophet. I told her I was sure Kyle didn’t know a lot about love.
What is love? In tennis if you’re “love,” it means you got skunked. According to the song, “Love is a many-splendored thing.” In the movies it can happen on rooftops. All I know for sure is that love gives meaning and spice to life.
My father told me when I was young that people in love often put on rosy red glasses and then they don’t see clearly. Dad said the glasses impaired their vision and wouldn’t allow the young lovers to get to know each other’s real personality. With these glasses on, the young lovers see things as they want them to be instead of how they really are. People owe it to themselves to take the rosy red glasses off before they get too serious. Many problems emerge when young lovers wait until after marriage to take off the rosy glasses and see things as they really are, and then work out the challenges.
“Do you believe in love at first sight?” I asked my area director. “No!” he answered, “I believe in sight at first love!” He explained that before marriage a person should have the best sight he has ever had; that he should look at all the angles—the personality attributes, the family background,
