Chapter 9

The second body was sprawled in the middle of the gym floor, eyes wide, limbs splayed out at odd angles. Just like Tim, the girl's throat had been slashed from ear to ear. A bright pink backpack lay next to her in a pool of congealed blood.

"Oh no," I whispered.

I recognized her immediately: the brunette girl from the bathroom. The one who'd told me about Tim being bullied. The one whose "friend" had been so mean and nasty. I felt physically ill. Mick moved closer, almost as if he could feel how upset I was. I found his presence surprisingly comforting.

We crouched beneath the bleachers, the dark shadows hiding us from the uniforms milling around. It had been easy enough to slip in behind the coroner's assistants as they wheeled in a gurney to collect the body.

Liz was standing a few feet from the body, dabbing her eyes with a white handkerchief. Not a Kleenex, but a proper square of cloth like they did in the old days. Monogrammed and everything. Beside her stood the same detective who'd been at Tim's crime scene. I recognized his voice.

"She was killed sometime last night. The janitor found her body this morning and called us in. You recognize her?"

"Yes, of course." Liz straightened her shoulders and tucked away her hankie. She was now in full principal mode. "Dana Smith. She was a sophomore. Intelligent, but fairly quiet. Not very popular, but friends with some of the more popular students." Liz shook her head. "Poor kid. She didn't deserve this... this horrible thing."

"I talked to her the other day at school," I said, keeping my voice pitched so only Mick could hear me. A feeling of sadness and regret welled up inside. "I didn't even get her name."

Guilty. That was it. I felt guilty. Which was ridiculous. This wasn't my fault. But it made me more determined to stop whoever was killing these kids.

"Was she in any way connected to the previous victim?" The detective glanced over at the coroner who crouched next to Dana's body, carefully avoiding the pool of blood.

"I don't believe so, they weren't friends as far as I know," Liz said, studiously avoiding looking at Dana's body. "But they had some classes together. It's possible they knew each other."

"She said he was bullied." I whispered to Mick. I wondered if Dana had been bullied, too. The redhead girl she'd been with certainly hadn't been very nice to her.

"You think that's true?" Mick asked.

"Yeah. It's definitely true."

"Do we have a serial killer on our hands?" Liz's voice was stronger now. As if she were trying to reassert control.

"Ma'am, I'm sorry, but I can't discuss that with you... "

"I'm not an idiot, Detective." Liz turned her full Glare of Death on the man. "I have eyes. Her throat was slashed. Just like Tim Newlund's."

I didn't wait to hear the detective's answer. I knew what it would be. "Come on. Let's get out of here. I've seen enough."

Mick nodded and reached out to grab my hand.
