Chapter Seven

Sarah knew this day would come. She’d shown them her gift, her curse, and now it was time for her to leave for the cages. The same fear rose inside her, leaving an acrid taste in her mouth.

“Don’t you even think that,” Joseph said aloud. “You’re going nowhere and especially not without me.”

“She called me….” Sarah didn’t want to repeat the hateful words. Sure, she’d been called names before, but no one had ever compared her to a Collector demon. Was she that bad? Maybe she was and simply didn’t know it.

“I know, and you are none of those awful things. You are the kindest, gentlest person I know. Hell, you wouldn’t hurt a fly unless provoked. After everything you’ve been through, you’re still fighting and showing an immeasurable amount of strength.”

“Strength?” Sarah asked, inching a bit out of her hiding place. “In case you haven’t noticed, I’m currently hiding under a bed.”

“That doesn’t diminish your strength in the least. You’ve come so far, fighting for every inch until you were confident enough to shift.” Joseph, it seemed, wouldn’t allow any of her accomplishments to go unnoticed. “You helped me make dinner… Okay, I helped you. Barely. And you had lunch with Hope and the children.”

“They think I’m a freak?” She despised that word. It gave her a nauseous feeling every time she heard it.

Joseph knelt on the bedroom floor before lying on his back beside the bed. “No one thinks that, and I’m beginning to wonder if Raine even meant it.”

“She said it.” Maybe he was sweet on the snake, no matter how hard that would be for her to accept after all this time spent together. Then why was he here lying on her floor next to the bed?

“Yes, she did, but I believe there’s more to this story. Fear makes you do crazy things.”

“Agreed.” She’d done many things driven by fear.

“I knew you’d understand. You have a kind heart. Maybe you can help her.”

Sarah inched to the edge of the bed frame. “How can I help her?” She doubted Raine wanted her anywhere near her.

“By being the wonderful woman you are. When Raine was a rescue, we brought her here for her safety. Her entire family had been wiped out. From what I hear, her grandmother tried to kill her, but she was possessed at the time. Then on top of Collector demons, dead bodies coming to life, the world collapsing, and a bunch of shifters come along saying they’re there to rescue her, she had to be scared out of her mind. Raine fainted when a falcon shifted back into a human in front of her. Her indoctrination into our world was traumatic.”

“That does sound bad.” Sarah could admit that even a decent person might have cracked under that kind of pressure. “Was what I did to Ben’s machine wrong?”

Joseph rolled onto his side in order to look straight at her. “Nothing you’ve done is wrong. The others were simply shocked by your power. But they are grateful for what you did for them.
